We brew all our own beer here at Boundary Bay Brewery. You probably already knew that. But did you know that we bottle it and distribute it ourselves too? We deliver to accounts all over Whatcom, Skagit and King county every day and we get to meet all kinds of great folks who choose to put our beer on tap in their establishment. We figured a good way for you to get to know these amazing people too was to show you just how cool they are in these Local Connections videos. Our latest Local Connections episode was filmed at Big Rock Cafe and Grocery on the corner of the turnabout at College Way and Hwy 9 in Mount Vernon.

beergoodfood did a write-up on The Big Rock Cafe & Grocery. We’re happy to say it was positive….

One of my new favorite places is the Big Rock Cafe & Grocery. This rare find combines elements you almost never see together: good food at a relative steal, a general store and gas station, an absolutely unique, all-ages atmosphere that’s very welcoming and, oh yeah, five microbrews on tap. Located on State Route 9, they’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6am to at least 10pm everyday.

Big Rock Cafe & Grocery is one interesting place. On the corner of the turnabout at College Way and Hwy 9 in Mount Vernon, sits what looks like your typical little corner grocery and gas station. Until you come inside. Then you begin to realize that you’ve entered something completely different.

Big Rock has been around since the 1920′s. Over the years, this location has been a tavern, a gas station, a tire shop, and a convenience store. Today it is a place where great minds meet to discuss their day and relieve stress.

It says right on their postcard, the one you get with your bill, “If Big Rock Cafe’ & Grocery don’t have it, you don’t need it.” On the menu it clearly states, “If you don’t enjoy your meal with us, maybe you should stop dining in convenience stores.” Not your typical grocery/gas/cafe’/karaoke/tavern at all!

As we sat down to order dinner, we noticed the lights were old milk pails, hanging upside down over the bulbs above our heads. On the wall hangs a set of bullhorns, a deer head with quite a rack and a Jackalope head too. Those fun, old-fashioned photos line the walls. Antique metal signs telling you that if you spit on the bar you’ll get a big fine. I suppose this was from when they used to have a problem with that sorta thing, with spittoons in these kind of places.
